Safety is our No. 1 Priority for Students
Best in Class Education Center offers tips for both dealing with bullying and cyberbullying and keeping kids safe and motivated in school

Unwanted, aggressive behavior through bullying and cyberbullying can be very difficult during adolescence and is especially disruptive in an academic environment. With school in session, Best in Class has compiled key tips on recognizing signs that a student is being bullied and how to prevent this type of behavior.

Noticing behavioral and emotional changes in a student is the first step to addressing the problem. Many kids don’t ask for help when being bullied, so it’s important to look for signs. Warning flags can include:

  • An unexplained loss of belongings such as toys, school supplies, clothes, or lunches
  • A decrease in enthusiasm to go to school, hang out with peers, or ride the bus
  • Changes in typical behavior or personality — appearing moody, anxious, or depressed.

If you notice any of these signs, let students know that parents and teachers are always available to listen to their concerns and that you will be on their side. Additionally, talk to the student’s teacher and communicate with tutors and social workers to see if they’ve noticed a problem.

According to iSafe, a nonprofit program dedicated to educating students about the safe and responsible use of technology, more than 25 percent of adolescents and teens have been bullied through their cell phone or on the Internet. Here are some signs a student is being cyberbullied:

  • Social withdrawal and a fear of technology — children or teens might stop using their cellphones, social media channels, or gaming devices.
  • Anger or frustration after using the computer or cell phone.

With the case of cyberbullying, addressing the importance of what is appropriate online behavior and what is crossing the line is key. Sitting down with your children and having an honest chat about their lives can lead them to open up about online interactions and the difficulties they are experiencing.

It’s important to remember that bullying and cyberbullying can continue to escalate if no action is taken. Be sure to maintain open lines of communication between students, teachers, tutors, and coaches to understand if there is a larger problem that needs addressing.
