Ohlone for Kids

Many think that Legos® are only toys, but at Ohlone for Kids & Teens, Legos® become a creative learning tool. Imagine using Legos® to learn about computer science, technology, math, and engineering by building Lego® models using real motors and programming the models to move. In Lego® Robotics classes, students are challenged to become builders and tinkerers, having to problem solve, set goals, and think logically in order to complete their projects. LEGO® Mindstorms EV3 Series and LEGO® Robot Creative Challenges are just two of the exciting classes in the summer enrichment programs offered by Ohlone for Kids & Teens.

For twenty-six years, Ohlone for Kids & Teens has been nurturing the habit of learning that becomes a life-long investment in personal development.

This summer, 1,500 children from around the Bay Area will attend Ohlone for Kids & Teens. Classes are held at Mission San Jose High School in Fremont and Cesar Chavez Middle School in Union City. Additionally, a 4-day Middle School Career Exploration Week will be held at the Ohlone College Newark Campus. Classes range from Lightning Algebra and Debate to Python Programming and Biotechnology. Creative curriculum and hands-on techniques are used to encourage students' interest in academics. At Ohlone for Kids & Teens, learning and fun go hand in hand.

Children and teens, entering grades 4-11, choose four classes per day, per session, from a vast list of activities that they can attend. This allows students to create a well-rounded schedule, providing them experience in a plethora of subject areas.

"We align our course offerings to the requests of parents, students and teachers in the Tri-Cities area. This allows students the opportunity to participate in topics they can’t typically get during the regular school year, or more time to focus on topics they enjoy or want a leg up in for the upcoming year," says Kate Giuffra, Director of Community Education at Ohlone College. “Based on last year’s requests, we are offering more computer programming and web design courses, including Game App Design for iPhone and iPad, Video Game Design, and Web Development with HTML5 and JavaScript . We also added new and innovative courses in engineering and science, including Environmental Engineering, Fun with Circuits, and Physics Fun.”

Additionally, being a part of Ohlone College, we realize the importance of creating interest at a young age for degree and career pathways. To support this, this year we will be offering a Middle School Career Exploration Week. This week will allow students to pick a career pathway, and gain a comprehensive, hands-on lecture and lab experience learning that topic. Pathways for this week include Respiratory Therapy, Computer Programming, Biotechnology, and Engineering, all taught by college faculty.

Classes are offered June 22 through July 30 in three different sessions, and August 10 through August 13 for one session. A free class schedule is available online.
