Happy Birthday Krishna!

Happy Birthday Krishna!

Above: Kuchipudi students Sindhu and Ahladini as Krishna and Radha, performing at the Sunnyvale Hindu Temple several years ago for Krishna Janmaashtami.

Under normal circumstances, temples in the Bay Area at this time of the year would have been celebrating Lord Krishna’s birthday (Janmaashtami) in full swing. Kids would be participating in dance and music festivals celebrating Krishna with their adorable talent and parents would be cherishing the moments with cameras and videos.  This year the temples are quiet, but, hopefully, next year by this time we are all back, celebrating thoroughly with music and dance.

Lord Krishna is probably the only fashion-loving God of all; he loved decorating himself with peacock feathers, flowers and draped himself in yellow silk. He played the flute, and danced like a celestial being, with gopikas and with nature itself! Kids and women love his eternal beauty, personified with dance and music!  In addition, he is probably the first ever feminist. Krishna’s personality and his relationships with women, not just with his epic love Radha or with his wife Rukmani, but with both of his mothers, remain exemplary. He gave his own name to Draupadi, wife of Pandavaas.  The only time he actively participated in Mahabharata was when Kauravas tried to unrobe Draupadi in the king’s court of Kauravas.

Happy Birthday Krishna!
