Is the Shadow of Guilt Hanging Over You?

Parenting is perhaps the only job we take on without training. We learn while doing—and inevitably, we get things wrong. So perhaps “perfect parenting” needs a different definition.

There are days when we snap at our child over a messy room, say “no” too quickly, become overly controlling, or later wonder, “Why did I react that way?” Guilt follows. And when it lingers, it can become a shadow over our parenting—making us overcompensate by saying yes when we mean no, buying things our children don’t really need, or constantly questioning our choices.

But can guilt that diminishes our worth really be the answer? ? What if it is an invitation to look deeper?

When the same reactions keep returning, there may be something beneath them: an overloaded schedule, an old belief from our own upbringing, an unmet expectation, or simply too little time to pause and connect. Writing down our thoughts can reveal patterns hidden in the rush of daily life. Sometimes, an honest conversation with our child can open a door we didn't know was closed.

And perhaps the most valuable parenting time is sometimes time away from parenting—quiet moments to reconnect with ourselves.

Maybe being a “perfect” parent was never about getting everything right. Maybe it is about having the courage to keep looking within, learning, and growing—with our children.
