TapeScape Opens at Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose

 

WHAT: Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose will debut TapeScape, an interactive art installation by Minnesota-based artist Eric Lennartson, on Saturday, September 5, 2026. 

 

Built from more than 24 miles of ordinary clear packing tape, TapeScape transforms everyday materials into a multi-level landscape of tunnels, bridges, and slides. Visitors of all ages can crawl, climb, slide, and explore while discovering connections between art, architecture, engineering, and play.

 

This is the Museum’s third TapeScape installation, and, as with each of Lennartson’s installations, the design is unique to San Jose. The 2026 installation is being constructed over five days with the help of 90+ local volunteers.

About the Artist

Eric Lennartson is a Minnesota-based artist, architect, and designer whose background in mathematics, physics, studio art, and architecture informs his immersive installations. He created TapeScape in 2011 to bring together art, STEAM education, hands-on play, and community engagement. Since then, TapeScape has been installed nearly 40 times at children’s museums, science centers, and galleries around the world.

Media Opportunities

Media are invited to experience TapeScape and capture families exploring the installation on opening day. Lennartson will be onsite and available for interviews. Kristi Yamaguchi’s Family Literacy Festival will also take place at the Museum on September 5, providing additional opportunities for coverage.
