National Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff
Lowriders Take Over the Purple Museum Inside and Out for a Month of Activities and Programs in Celebration of Local Latino Culture
August 29, 2024
Special to India Parent Magazine
“Low and slow” vehicles from the local car club, Boulevard Bombs, will literally cruise into Children’s Discovery Museum to kick off National Hispanic Heritage Month on Saturday, September 14 from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Throughout the month, hands-on art activities, special programs and themed workshops will honor and explore the myriad contributions Latinos have made to all facets of society.
From heritage to hopping and hydraulics, the lowrider’s rich tapestry of self-expression, creativity, and storytelling will be on display inside and outside of the iconic Purple Museum on weekends through October 13. During select hours, owners will accompany their vehicles to share their knowledge, history, and passion with visitors for a truly unique experience.
“I can’t think of a better way to kick off this month than by celebrating the lowriding culture that has been such an important part of San Jose’s history and culture,” said Marilee Jennings, executive director of Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose. “The Latino community has contributed so much to San Jose’s national identity. We’re proud to participate in this special month,” added Jennings.
During the kickoff event, Phillip Retamoza, known locally as the Purple Car Singer, will dazzle with his custom-designed, purple 1952 Mercury Lowrider bomb (Mercster) - a fully equipped mobile entertainment center complete with his purple guitar. Retamoza will perform music sessions throughout the day.
Author and digital artist Ricardo Cortez will present his popular book, The ABCs of Lowriding. This mastermind of “Low Rider Fever” will share the history of lowriding by reading from his book, hosting a Q & A and facilitating an art activity at 11:00 a.m.
